KATHY CAUDILL
A third generation self-taught artist, Kathy Caudill has had experience in a wide range of art mediums. Kathy began her career working as a commercial artist doing freelance work for various advertising agencies and corporate clients. In 1980, she designed the official seal for Raleigh County, West Virginia. For a time, she also worked as a courtroom sketch artist. In 1980, she devoted her energy to painting full-time.
Her subject matter derives from the ordinary people, places, and things that have special meaning to her. In her paintings, Kathy places her primary focus on effectively capturing the emotion or feeling she wishes to convey to the viewer. Technical execution is secondary to successfully rendering a composition the viewer can relate to on a personal level.
Recently, Kathy’s work was shown in the exhibition, “In the Tradition of Wyeth: Contemporary Watercolor Masters”, at the Vero Beach Museum of Art in Vero Beach, Florida, from October 1, 2011 through January 15, 2012. The exhibition was built around two Andrew Wyeth paintings from the museum’s permanent collection, plus three additional Andrew Wyeth paintings from private collections. The remainder of the show featured Kathy’s work and the work of nine other watercolorists selected by the museum from around the country.
Kathy has won numerous awards for her work including: Best of Show in both 2012 and 2010, and the Buddy Yancey Award of Merit in 2011 in the South Carolina Watermedia Society’s 33rd, 34th, and 35thAnnual exhibitions. Each of her winning paintings traveled for a year with the South Carolina State Museum to museums throughout South Carolina.
Also in 2012, she was awarded the Dr. PH Martin Salis International Award Number 3 in the Southern Watercolor Society’s 35th Annual Exhibition in Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, and has received top merit awards at the South Carolina State Fair Juried Exhibitions, including First and Second place awards in watercolor in 2012. She has also received top merit awards in the West Virginia Watercolor Society, and First and Second place awards in North Light Magazine’s Cover Competitions. She was selected as cover artist for the South Carolina Art and Agriculture Calendar in 2001, and her paintings were featured in The Artist’s Magazine’s “2005 Limited Edition Art Calendar”. Examples of Kathy’s work appear in the book, Splash 8: Watercolor Discoveries.
Kathy’s studio was also featured in an article in the Fall 2009 issue of American Artist Magazine’s Studios.

She is the author of Landscapes in Watercolor, Walter Foster Publishing, Laguna Hills, California. Her work has appeared in numerous publications including Wonderful West Virginia Magazine, Creative Loafing Magazine, YC Magazine, and Carolina Arts Magazine. Her work was featured in the article, “The Year’s Best Paintings”, in the February 2011 issue of Watercolor Artist Magazine and in the article, “Continuing the Tradition”, in the February 2012 edition of the magazine. Her work will again appear in the 2013 edition of the magazine. Her paintings have graced the covers of three Dick Blick art catalogs. Her credits also include three murals painted for the U.S. Postal Service and NBC Television.
Her work is widely collected both nationally and internationally, and is held in private and corporate collections including: the private collection of actor James Earl Jones, and corporate collections such as Union Carbide, CSX Corporation, and Bank of America, to name a few.
Kathy has taught local and regional painting classes and workshops for twenty-five years. She has served as juror and guest lecturer for numerous art groups and exhibitions.
She is a member of the Southern Watercolor Society, Allied Artists of America, a Signature Member of the West Virginia Watercolor Society, and a Member With Excellence of the South Carolina Watermedia Society.
